The consequences for those who had to live through a new reality that still exists today but has yet to be fully understood. The victims of Chernobyl are survivors of a nuclear Third World War. According to Alexievich, in this hostile world, "everything seems completely normal; evil hides behind a new mask, and one is unable to see it, hear it, touch it, or smell it. Anything can kill you... water, soil, an apple, rain. Our dictionary is obsolete. There are no words or feelings yet to describe this."

Voices from Chernobyl received the US National Book Critics Circle Award in March 2006, recognizing Alexievich's narrative power and the importance of the stories she tells. This Spanish edition also includes previously unpublished testimonies, added by the author for the latest version of the work, created to mark the 20th anniversary of the disaster.
