Australia's literary agent scene is considerably smaller than the US or UK, with most agencies based in Sydney or Melbourne and representing a mix of literary fiction, crime, and children's and YA, genres where Australian authors have found particular international success. Because the local market is compact, many Australian agents also maintain relationships with US or UK co-agents to place foreign rights.

Some Australian authors, especially in niche genres, submit directly to publishers rather than through an agent, since the number of agents actively taking new clients at any given time is relatively limited compared to larger markets. Checking whether an agency is currently open to submissions before querying will save time.
